What Is Phenolphthalein?

Phenolphthalein is an organic compound widely used in analytical chemistry, mainly as an acid-base indicator. Its most well-known characteristic is its ability to change color depending on the pH of the medium, which makes it a fundamental tool in the practice of titrations or chemical assessment processes.

From a chemical point of view, phenolphthalein is a weak acid compound with a slightly complex molecular structure, whose molecular formula is C20H14O4. It belongs to the family of phthalein indicators, compounds that react to changes in the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.

Under normal conditions, phenolphthalein is colorless and has very low solubility in water, although it dissolves easily in alcohols. This is why it is usually prepared in alcoholic solutions for laboratory use.

Behavior of Phenolphthalein Against pH

The operation of phenolphthalein is based on its chemical response to the pH of the medium:

  • In acidic or neutral media, phenolphthalein remains colorless.
  • When the system becomes alkaline or strongly basic, the compound undergoes a structural transformation that causes the appearance of an intense pink or fuchsia color.

This change is generally observed from a pH close to 8.2, gradually intensifying until the solution becomes clearly pink.

Main Uses of Phenolphthalein

Thanks to its clear and rapid visual response, phenolphthalein has several applications, among which the following stand out:

  • Acid-base titrations, where it is used to identify the final point of the reaction.
  • Qualitative pH determination, especially to distinguish between acidic and basic solutions.
  • Educational and demonstration practices, since its color change is easily observable.
  • Tests in construction materials, such as detecting carbonation in concrete, related to a decrease in pH.

In the past, phenolphthalein was also used for pharmaceutical purposes, particularly as a laxative, although its use has been restricted due to safety considerations.

Importance in the Laboratory

Phenolphthalein remains one of the most widely used indicators in analytical chemistry, due to its low cost, ease of preparation, and high sensitivity to pH changes. Its proper use allows reliable results to be obtained in volumetric analysis and contributes to the correct interpretation of neutralization processes.
